Reception: Thursday, September 6, 6 – 8pm
Visual Arts Gallery
601 West 26 Street, 15th floor
New York City

The Office of Alumni Affairs invites you to the opening reception of "Myths & Realities" at the Visual Arts Gallery.

Deconstructing the strangeness of the everyday and exploring the boundary between actuality and illusion is the focus of "Myths & Realities," an exhibition of 16 notable alumni. The artists in the exhibition engage two centuries of work from popular culture, from archaic formats like the pinhole camera and daguerreotype to the museum diorama and wide-screen Hollywood film with resulting works that are potent reminders of how images can reshape perceived reality. Co-curated by The New York Times Magazine Director of Photography Kathy Ryan and VII Magazine Editor Scott Thode, "Myths & Realities" is on view through September 29.

This exhibition is free and open to the public. For more information, click here.

SVA in LA

Last month, a team of SVA faculty and staff traveled to Los Angeles to host an alumni reception, meet with alumni and industry contacts and attend the SIGGRAPH2012 conference. The reception was a great success, with over 100 alumni and creative industry professionals in attendance. To see pictures of the reception click here. Through hosting alumni events and conducting outreach, SVA continues to increase its presence on the west coast, generating new industry connections, maintaining connections with employers with whom SVA has long-standing relationships and gaining valuable insights into the job market for future alumni and graduates.

SVA Annual 2012

From filmmaking to graphic design, and from fashion photography to fine art, SVA made its influence felt not only in New York City but around the world in the 2011 – 2012 academic year and the media took notice. Kathleen Fitzgerald and Lizzy Showman (current students, MFA Design Department) designed seat cushions to publicly thank a group of Manhattan bus drivers. “The life of a bus driver is not always easy,” they told CNN.com. Keith Lapning (BFA 2008 Film & Video) was selected to design a 35 foot-high balloon for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “To have my own creation up there with my icons like Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse, Jim Henson's Kermit the Frog and John Lasseter's Buzz Lightyear, it was a really good feeling,” Lapning told the New York Post. Meet these and other SVA newsmakers at annual.sva.edu.
