Copyright and Creativity: Legal Basics for All Artists

This event is open to all students and alumni

Regardless of your artistic medium, the hot topics today are copyright and fair use. What is and is not protected by copyright? What is infringement? What is fair use? And what recourse do artists have against allegations of infringement? How can artists protect their own creative works? Attend this talk with artist and arts lawyer, Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento, and find out. RSVP here.

Philip Levine and Andrew Moore in Conversation

Inspired by Detroit, the greatest American industrial city of the 20th Century, poet laureate Philip Levine and photographer Andrew Moore discuss their personal histories with the city and their creative evolutions as they have watched and documented its decline over the last three decades. Elaine Scarry: Beauty and the Pact of Aliveness

MFA Art Criticism and Writing Department invites Elaine Scarry to discuss her argument that beauty is a call to social justice, drawing on artists and philosophers from Plato to the present to show three different ways in which beauty presses us to repair the injuries of the world.  For more information please click here.

Investigating the importance of taste from the perspectives of the culinary arts, sociology, art history and theory, anthropology, as well as the cognitive, material and biological sciences, the conference targets intersections between taste and value.

Taking Custody: The Double Life of the Artist Mother

Artist, educator and blogger Sharon L. Butler will moderate a conversation with alumnus Renèe Cox (MFA 1992 Photography),  Katherine Bernhardt (MFA 2000 Fine Arts), Suzanne McClelland (MFA 1989 Fine Arts), Rachel Papo (MFA 2005 Photography, Video and Related Media) and Amy Stein (MFA 2006 Photography, Video and Related Media) and faculty member Danica Phelps. The artists will discuss their experiences negotiating the demands of the commercial art world with those of motherhood. For more information please click here.
