Action Surf Photography in Rincon, Puerto Rico

One of the premier surf photographers, Art Brewer, and a highly skilled and talented support staff (including Jean Paul Van Swae of Surfer magazine and professional surfer Otto Flores) lead this specially designed workshop on action surf photography. This is a unique opportunity to learn the technical skills and equipment necessary to shoot surfing and other water-related sports, but also offers a rare opportunity to become immersed in the surf culture of Rincon, Puerto Rico’s “Hawaii of the Atlantic.”

Tax Strategies for Artists

The Office of Career Development welcomes you to a workshop with CPA and attorney Michael Goldberg. Michael will focus on tax planning and compliance issues for freelancers and artists to consider. Topics will include choice of business entity (corporation, LLC, sole proprietorship), worker classification (employee vs. independent contractor), tax filing requirements, tax deductions, expense deductions for home office and equipment purchases, IRS recordkeeping requirements, sales tax considerations relating to sales of artwork and purchases of art supplies, so-called 'hobby loss rules' and deductions for retirement plan contributions. The focus is practical applications of tax rules to specific situations.

The Funding Ecosystem: What You Should Know Before You Start Fundraising

This workshop, hosted by the Office of Career Development and the Computer Animation and Visual Effects Department, covers information that artists need as they begin to research and apply for grants. Topics of discussion include types of funding sources, frequently used terms in fundraising, what happens once your application is submitted and processes to follow and understand from the initial inquiry through receipt of a grant. The goal of this workshop is to prepare artists to understand and better navigate the range of funding resources available to the field.

Presented by Kay Takeda, director of grants and services, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

A Panel Discussion

On Thursday, January 31, the Office of Alumni Affairs hosted a Post-Sandy panel discussion on the relief effort and artists' response to the storm. Charles H. Traub, chair of the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department, moderated the talk.

Alumnus John Mattiuzzi (MFA 2012 Computer Art) discussed his video Frankenstorm, which captured the human and emotional impact of the storm in Brooklyn. Alumnus Jessica Rionero (BFA 2010 Film and Video) from BeGracious.org and founder Chelsea Marino, described their non profit's mission to raise money for the purpose of rebuilding people's homes. Kathy Shorr (BFA 1988 Photography), founder and director of The Summer in the City Project, spoke about her experience helping Katrina survivors in New Orleans and how it inspired her to aid Sandy's youngest victims. Dena Muller, director of new initiatives at the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), explained the impact the storm has had on the wider community as well as the art world and the steps NYFA is taking to provide assistance.

The event was a huge success. A podcast recording of the panel will be available next week.  Stay tuned.
