Summer Drawing Mixer a Hit!

Our summer drawing mixer on July 15 was a huge success with over 80 alumni in attendance. It was wonderful to see so many alumni together and making art. To see pictures from the evening, click here.

CV Writing and Job Search for College Teaching Positions
Thursday, August 1, 3:00 – 4:30pm

This workshop will give an overview of the job search process for college art teaching positions, as well as the components of your teaching packet, including your CV, cover letter, teaching philosophy and artist statement. This workshop for MFA students and alumni will give an overview of these elements and then focus primarily on the CV, and how this is different for artists seeking teaching positions. It will help you write, organize and fine-tune your materials. If you have a CV, bring it on a laptop or in hard copy. Bring any job postings you would like to apply to, as well.

Setting Your Rates as a Freelancer

Many freelancers, especially when just starting out, struggle with how to price their services. This workshop will cover pricing your services and provide you with simple steps to follow in negotiating rates, protecting your intellectual property and accepting, completing and invoicing a freelance job. The workshop will provide resources and general information relevant to all majors and is open to alumni.

The Pond, the Mirror, the Kaleidoscope: Opens August 20

“The Pond, the Mirror, the Kaleidoscope,” the 2013 alumni exhibition curated by Thomas Woodruff, chair of the BFA Illustration and BFA Cartooning departments, opens this month. The show has been receiving some exciting press: Hi-Fructose offers a preview here and Juxtapoz offers one here. Check out the exhibition and join us for the reception on Wednesday, September 11.

Tom Sito Lecture and Book Signing

In his recent book Moving Innovation (MIT Press, 2013), SVA alumnus Tom Sito (BFA 1977 Animation)–an industry insider for more than 30 years–describes the evolution of computer graphics. He’ll be at the SVA Theatre to discuss and sign copies of his book.

Featured Alumnus Story

Brooklyn-based street artist turned art-world superstar Brian Donnelly (BFA 1996 Illustration), better known as KAWS,  has made another giant leap in his creative career. Known for transforming iconic pop culture fixtures into cartoon-like versions of his own, KAWS has now integrated his famous Companion character into a redesigned Moonman statuette for the MTV Video Music Awards.
